I do several things, depending on where I'm parked and for how long. My Savage is also often parked in an apartment parking lot - although it's lit at night, I'm a little paranoid about it. I work in a shaky area of Philadelphia, so it's locked up at work, too.

First, I religiously use the steering-lock: probably easy to defeat, but it's one more thing to annoy a thief and slow them down.

Second, I have a nifty brake disc-lock: looks like a mini-dumbbell. Two metal balls connected by a short shaft, goes right thru the disc. No edges to pry on, looks tough to defeat. Got it from www.lockitt.com, "Balls" lock - cheap at $30. Really cool to play with, too! Looks like some kind of chrome sex-toy.

Third, I have a 6' plastic-covered cable with end loops, not the thickest but easy to carry around. I throw that on if the bike's sitting a few days, or it's going to be in the parking lot at work after hours. Either loop it thru the wheel and frame, or bike to post / railing / van-bumper, whatever's nearby.

Fourth, I may pick up a Xena alarm/disc-lock. Stapler-style disc lock, with an vibration-alarm in it. Local shop has them for $70, I've seen ads for about $50 mail order.

I recommend poking around LockItt's site: they have a "tips" section. Lots of typos, but good stuff. And I have no clue what to avoid.
